Only in NZ - Father at 111 Years Old

Tuatara Becomes Father At Age 111 | NowPublic News Coverage

Proving that it never really is too late, a tuatara--a rare reptile native to New Zealand--has become a father, possibly for the first time, at the age of 111.

But Mildred, an 80-year-old tuatara, apparently caught Henry's eye and the two mated last summer. Mildred's eggs recently hatched, making Henry a father at the ripe old age of 111.

The birth is great news for staff at the Southland Museum in Invercargill. The museum is home to Henry and more than 70 more tuataras, an endangered species that is of great interest to scientists. The tuatara is descended from a familiy of reptiles that roamed the earth at the same time as dinosaurs. The reptile hasn't changed its form much in over 225 million years. The relatives of tuatara died out about 60 million years ago which is why the tuatara is sometimes called a "living fossil."
